Create your free account

  1. Open the Academy and click Sign in, then Create account.
  2. Confirm your email and set a password. There is nothing to pay: every guide, quiz, the simulator, and certifications are free.

Finding your way around

  • Student Portal: your XP, day streak, quizzes, and ranking.
  • Learning & Teaching: the guides and games, across the Learn, Individual Games, and Multiplayer Games tabs.
  • Cohorts: groups your instructor creates for your class.

Guides & games

Guides

The Learn tab holds 18 illustrated guides covering the rules of the road, rigging and setup, theory, and drills, for example Navigation Lights, Points of Sail, Tides and Currents, and VHF Radio and the Phonetic Alphabet. Guides are self-paced and you can re-read them any time.

Solo quizzes

Under Individual Games you will find nine auto-marked quizzes such as Parts of a Boat, Points of Sail, Navigation Lights, Buoyage and Marks, Signal Flags, the Beaufort Scale, VHF and Phonetics, Racing Rules Scenarios, and a Safety Scenario. Each gives instant feedback and awards XP when you finish.

Multiplayer

The Multiplayer Games tab is where the live quiz and the 3D regatta live. See Live quiz & regatta below.

XP, ranks & badges

Earning XP

You earn XP by completing quizzes and by logging in each day, which also builds a day streak with a bonus. Your total XP and streak show on the Student Portal.

The rank ladder

XP moves you up eight ranks, automatically: Deckhand, First Mate, Bosun, Skipper, Navigator, Quartermaster, Captain, and Commodore. You cannot set your rank by hand, it climbs as you earn XP.

Badges and the leaderboard

Badges unlock for milestones such as perfect scores and completing lots of quizzes. View them all on Badges & Levels. Your Club Leaderboard fills in once you and your club mates start earning XP.

Cohorts & teaching

Creating a cohort

  1. Open the Cohorts tab and click New cohort.
  2. Give it a name, link a Booking course or type one manually, and add an optional term and start and end dates.
  3. Click Save.

Adding learners

  1. Open the cohort and find Add a learner.
  2. Enter the learner's email and click Add. We match the email to an Academy profile so their pathway progress shows up, and link it once they sign in.

Tracking progress

The Members & pathway progress section shows each learner's overall progress, how many pathways they are enrolled on, and a Certified badge once they have earned an award.

Live quiz & regatta simulator

Crew Battle (live quiz)

Crew Battle is a fast, host-led multiplayer quiz. The host opens a room and learners join on their phones with a room code or QR code, then answer timed questions on a shared leaderboard.

The 3D regatta simulator

The regatta simulator is a coaching tool with real sailing physics: wind shifts, gusts, dirty air, tide, and the Racing Rules. From the simulator menu you can:

  • Host a race: set the venue, wind, tide, course length, and fleet, then share a QR code and run the race with analysis overlays.
  • Join a race: scan the coach's QR code or enter the race code, pick your boat class, and sail from your phone or laptop.
  • Practice solo: line up against AI boats to drill starts, laylines, and shifts on your own.
  • Open a breakdown: replay a saved race with the timeline, follow-cam, annotations, and rule incidents.

Running a race as coach

  1. Choose Host a race and set the conditions and course, then click Create race & open lobby.
  2. Share the race code or QR code shown in the lobby. Sailors appear as they join.
  3. Click Start race when everyone is in. Use the overlays and annotation tools during the race.
  4. Use Save breakdown to keep the race for later review.

Certifications

What a pathway is

A pathway is a custom award with two parts: self-study modules you tick off as you complete them, and on-water competencies that an instructor signs off. Finish both and you earn a certificate with a verify code.

For learners

  1. Open Certifications and click Start or Continue on a pathway.
  2. Tick off each module as you study it. On-water skills show as Awaiting instructor until they are Signed off.
  3. When everything is complete, your certificate appears under My certificates, ready to download as a PDF.

For instructors

  1. Click New pathway to define the modules, competencies, and XP awarded on completion.
  2. Under Learner progress, pick a pathway and click a competency badge next to a learner to toggle it to Signed off.
  3. When a learner has finished, click Issue to generate their certificate and verify code.

Parents & under-13s

Younger learners

If a learner is under 13, a parent or guardian is asked to give consent before the account becomes fully active. The parent receives a secure link by email and approves from there.

Coaching parents through race progress and messaging lives in Performance. The Academy itself is open to all ages once any required consent is in place.

FAQ

Is the Academy really free?

Yes. Every guide, quiz, the 3D simulator, teaching tools, and certifications are free forever, with no trials or per-seat fees.

How do I join my coach's live race?

Choose Join a race, scan the QR code or enter the race code your coach shares, pick your boat class, and wait in the lobby for the start.

Can I change my rank?

No. Ranks are automatic and based on the XP you have earned, from Deckhand up to Commodore.

Can a coach replay a race afterwards?

Yes. During or after a race the coach clicks Save breakdown, then later opens it from Open a breakdown to review with the timeline and annotations.
